Commending Becky Steinhoff on her many achievements and contributions as Executive Director of the Goodman Community Center and congratulating her on her retirement.
Body
WHEREAS, Becky Steinhoff was a social work intern in 1988 when she first started teaching elementary afterschool at what was then the Atwood Community Center; and
WHEREAS, within five years, Becky was made director of the Center; and
WHEREAS, Becky created a place where everyone is welcomed and respected, bringing vision, boundless energy, possibility thinking, heart, and humor to every initiative she takes on; and
WHEREAS, under Becky’s leadership:
· The budget increased from $250,000 to $6.5 million;
· The staff grew from three full-time staff to more than 100 full-, part-time, and volunteer staff, including many young people getting their first job experience;
· The Center expanded from one building on Atwood Avenue to a campus with two beautifully renovated historic industrial buildings with more than 77,000 square feet;
· The Center’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive went from serving 300 families to nearly 4,000;
· The Center grew from serving hundreds annually to providing programs and resources to more than 35,000 people every year;
· The Center’s Girl Neighborhood Power became Girls, Inc. and then Girls, Inc. of Greater Madison, now helping more than 1,000 girls across the city become strong, smart, and bold;
· The TEENworks program has helped high school students discover they like learning, school doesn’t have to suck, and work can be rewarding; and
· The older adult program grew from meals and bingo to offering cooking classes, tech ed, tai chi, and more; and
WHEREAS, while Becky may be stepping down from her role as Executive Director of the Goodman Community Center, “The Becky Effect” will endure, making our community stronger at this special place she was instrumental in creating;
