Title
Proclaiming the year 2021 as the Peace Corps 60th Anniversary Year and that March 1st of each year be recognized as “Peace Corps Day” in the City of Madison.
Body
WHEREAS, the Peace Corps was created in 1961, with Peace Corps Volunteers serving in 141 countries, and during this time Wisconsin citizens have had one of the longest and deepest traditions of Peace Corps Service with over 6,400 Wisconsinites having served in the Peace Corps since its creation; and,
WHEREAS, the people of the city of Madison who have served, or are serving, in the Peace Corps exemplify the ideals of Peace Corps with its mission to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling its three goals:
• To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
• To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
• To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans; and,
WHEREAS, the University of Wisconsin-Madison through its educational leadership in research, outreach and teaching being the number one recruiting campus in the U.S. with over 3,300 of its graduates having put their education and experience to work around the world in the areas of education, health, environment, community and economic development, agriculture, and youth in development as Peace Corps Volunteers; and,
WHEREAS, returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Wisconsin-Madison have helped Madison Metropolitan School District teachers in guiding their students to be on the leading edge of their educational pursuits by enabling and supporting global learning focused on cultural sensitivity and global competency; and,
WHEREAS, the Peace Corps has provided thousands of University of Wisconsin-Madison graduates with real-world, cultural and work experiences by partnering with citizens across the globe; and,
WHEREAS, the Peace Corps serves as a shining example of excellence in university-government collaboration, fostering agricultural, business, education, environmental, community and economic health and youth development throughout the world,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison in the State Wisconsin, do hereby proclaim that the year 2021 be designated as the Peace Corps 60th Anniversary Year and that March 1st of each year be recognized as “Peace Corps Day” in Madison, and commend its observance to all residents.
