Commending and thanking Alderperson Maurice "Mo" Cheeks for his dedicated service to the constituents in District 10 and to the City of Madison.
Body
WHEREAS, Alderperson Maurice Cheeks was elected to the Madison Common Council on April 2, 2013; and,

WHEREAS, Alderperson Cheeks served as Common Council President Pro Tem for the 2015 - 2016 term; and

WHEREAS, Alderperson Cheeks served on the Allied Area Task Force, Capitol East District Committee, Committee on Sweatfree Purchases, Public Safety Review Committee, Community Development Block Grant Committee, Pedestrian/Bicycle/Motor Vehicle Commission, Sustainable Madison Transportation Master Plan Oversight Committee (Madison in Motion), Common Council Organizational Committee, Board of Estimates, City-County Homeless Issues Committee and the Board of Park Commissioners ; and,

WHEREAS, during Alderperson Cheeks’ tenure he advocated for and passed the city’s first 6-week Paid Family Leave policy, led the adoption of a Ban the Box ordinance preventing hiring discrimination based on criminal record, laid the groundwork for the implementation of Child Savings Accounts as a means of investing in the future of Madison’s youth; and,

WHEREAS, he fought tirelessly for his district, successfully stewarding the elimination of a longstanding food dessert in the Allied Drive neighborhood, as well as establishing the new Allied Park through a youth led design process; and,

WHEREAS, he was instrumental, along with Alderperson Matt Phair, in building support for investments into an agenda to proactively reduce youth and adult violence and recidivism, later known as the “15 Point Plan”; and,

WHEREAS, he leaves a legacy of visible civic pride, having championed the adoption of a new Madison Flag, and passed a resolution that now calls for the city’s flag to be flown on all city buildings; and,
