Awarding the 12th Annual Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award to Edward Lee.
Body
WHEREAS, the Madison Common Council created the Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award in memory of Jeffrey Erlanger’s great contributions to the City of Madison; and,
WHEREAS, the Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award Committee has selected Edward Lee, an individual who shares Jeffrey Erlanger’s dedication to, and passion for, civility, integrity and individual human rights, as recipient of the 2018 award; and,
WHEREAS, Ed has served the Urban League of Greater Madison (ULGM) and residents of Madison in a variety of roles including interim President/CEO three times. He is currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the ULGM; and,
WHEREAS, Ed has been a proud Urban Leaguer for more than 23 years, beginning his career as an Academic Specialist with the Urban League’s Project Jamaa after-school tutoring program for Madison middle school students; and,
WHEREAS, throughout his career, Ed has been a bridge builder with many vulnerable populations, corporate decision makers, government officials and nonprofit organizations where he exercised civility, integrity and genuine empathy for those in need; and,
WHEREAS, for more than two decades, Ed has embodied the principles of Jeffrey Erlanger by co-chairing the annual City-County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Coalition, which reflects on peaceful collaboration across race, religion and gender; developing the Madison Regional Economic Development and Diversity Summit; and coordinating the ULGM expungement clinic to give ex-offenders who paid their debt to society a chance to remove items from CCAP and other records that prevent them from finding jobs or obtaining housing; and,
WHEREAS, Ed is known for his quiet, effective leadership and is highly respected by all who have the opportunity to work with or meet him,
