Awarding the Eleventh Annual Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award to Sheray Wallace.
Body
WHEREAS, the Madison Common Council created the Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award in memory of Jeffrey Erlanger’s great contributions to the city of Madison; and

WHEREAS, the Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award Committee has selected Sheray Wallace, an individual who shares Jeffrey Erlanger’s dedication to, and passion for, civility and individual human rights, as the recipient of the 2017 award; and

WHEREAS, Sheray, a grass roots activist and advocate for the Meadowood neighborhood, created a Health Partnership to oversee health needs for her neighborhood. Residents are welcome to come to Sheray’s office in the Meadowridge Library and have their blood pressure taken, ask questions about healthy eating, discuss diabetes treatment options or whatever other health concerns they are experiencing; and

WHEREAS, Sheray makes the elimination of violence, especially with our youth, in her neighborhood a priority. She has organized breakfast and suppers to discuss alternatives to violence and she has organized an End to Violence march in her neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, Sheray is passionate about every individual in our neighborhood being treated with respect and dignity and makes certain everyone has the fundamental necessities of life. She helps the homeless find homes, she makes certain new parents have the necessities of child care, she makes certain food and medication are available to everyone who needs it; and

WHEREAS, Sheray teaches us tolerance, kindness and caring by being herself and being around us as often as possible. Sheray is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure residents have what they need, when they need it. Sheray has the tenacity of a bulldog when it comes to fighting for what is right and what is owed our neighborhood and residents; and
