Proclaiming March 21, 2017 as “Cities' Immigration Day of Action”.

Body

WHEREAS, America is a nation of immigrants, and wave after wave of immigrants seeking a better life has built our nation and brought significant social, economic, and cultural benefits to communities nationwide; and,

 

WHEREAS, Madison, Wisconsin is such a community, as immigrants have enriched our city’s culture, increased our productivity and innovation, and bolstered our economy; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mayors in cities big and small, including the City of Madison, foster welcoming and secure cities for all their residents, regardless of who they are or where they come from; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mayors across America have called on the federal government to enact comprehensive immigration reform and enforce the nation’s immigration laws in a humane manner that does not disrupt the lives of city residents, and, in the absence of federal immigration reform, mayors and their cities seek strategies to protect and secure all their residents while ensuring that local law enforcement is focused on community policing; and,

 

WHEREAS, The U.S. Conference of Mayors is organizing a National Immigration Day of Action on Tuesday, March 21, led by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Chair of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) Latino Alliance, Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, Co-chairs of the USCM Immigration Reform Task Force and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, Chair of the USCM Mayors and Police Chiefs Task Force,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison, joins cities across the country in proclaiming March 21, 2017 Cities’ Immigration Day of Action, declaring its solidarity with the immigrant community, and asserting its commitment to the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and equality.
