Acknowledging with gratitude and admiration the life and work of Clyde Stubblefield.

Body

WHEREAS, Clyde Stubblefield chose to become a permanent resident of Madison after falling in love with the city while performing here as a member of the James Brown band; and

 

WHEREAS, he is famous for his creation of a unique percussion beat which earned him the enduring title of "The Funky Drummer"; and

 

WHEREAS, his funky beat has been one of the most sampled or copied pieces of music in history, recognizable in hits including Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise" and LL Cool J's "Momma Said Knock You Out," forming a base for music from rock-and-roll to hip hop; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde Stubblefield contributed regularly to the music scene in Madison, mentoring and collaborating with many other musicians, even while continuing to contribute nationally, in performance and on recordings, with famous and diverse artists such as The JB's and Jabo Starks; and

 

WHEREAS, Clyde's mark on the music world is evident through the inclusion of his drumsticks in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio and his induction into the WAMI Hall of Fame in 2000; and

 

WHEREAS, the presence of the legendary Clyde Stubblefield as a resident of Madison contributed significantly to our community identity, and we are honored to call him our own;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council, on behalf of the citizens of the City of Madison, Wisconsin, do hereby acknowledge with gratitude and admiration the life and work of Clyde Stubblefield.
