Resolution Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Madison - Freiburg Sister City Relationship
Body
WHEREAS, on May 31, 1988, the Madison Common Council passed a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the City of Freiburg to establish a sister city relationship between the City of Freiburg, Federal Republic of Germany and the City of Madison, Wisconsin; and
 
WHEREAS, since 1988, city officials, including every mayor since then and several Common Council members, and citizens of the two cities have exchanged visits many times, forming lasting friendships, strengthening the ties between Freiburg and Madison and providing avenues for the exchange of ideas and learning from each other; and
 
WHEREAS, Madison citizens came together to form the Madison-Freiburg Sister City Committee to support and expand the sister city partnership through such activities as hosting students from Freiburg in Madison homes, holding a regular Stammtisch, organinzing trips to Freiburg, and presenting informative programs about Freiburg; and
 
WHEREAS, University of Wisconsin students have, for over 50 years, had the opportunity to spend their junior year in Freiburg, also contributing to the exchange of visits and ideas; and
 
WHEREAS, Freiburg has emerged as an international leader in sustainable urban planning and development, and has generously shared knowledge and experience in such areas as planning, transportation and renewable energy with Madison officials;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison affirm their commitment to the friendship with Freiburg and its citizens as formalized in the sister city agreement of 1988 and celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of this relationship.
