Honoring and congratulating the Wisconsin AIDS Ride on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.
Body
WHEREAS, in 1990, AIDS Network became the state designated AIDS service provider in 13 Wisconsin counties and now offers comprehensive case management, prevention, legal, dental and other essential services; and
WHEREAS, in June 2002, a group of volunteers and AIDS Network staff formed ACT (AIDS Network Cycling Together), a bicycle fundraising event to benefit Madison's AIDS Network; and
WHEREAS, the inaugural event, ACT I, a six-day, 450-mile bike ride with 130 riders and 59 crew members was held August 4 - 9, 2003; and
WHEREAS, beginning with ACT III, the annual fundraiser became a four-day, 300-mile event, touring the 13-county AIDS Network service area; and
WHEREAS, today the ACT ride, known as the Wisconsin AIDS Ride, has grown to be one of the premier AIDS rides in the nation; and
WHEREAS, in the nine previous rides 1,145 riders have ridden over 3,000 miles supported by 783 crew members and over 1,000 other volunteers; and
WHEREAS, Alderpersons Bridget Maniaci, Larry Palm and Brian Solomon have participated in the Wisconsin AIDS Ride; and
WHEREAS, the nine previous rides have raised $2,789,680 for AIDS Network, funds that remain in our community to provide HIV/AIDS services; and
WHEREAS, ACT 10, the 10th Wisconsin AIDS Ride, will take place August 2 - 5, 2012;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council honor and congratulate the Wisconsin AIDS Ride on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.
