Expressing appreciation and honor for the contributions and sacrifices veterans and their families have made for our country and our community.
Body
WHEREAS, at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918, the Armistice between the Allied nations and Germany was signed, ending World War I; and
WHEREAS, on June 4, 1926, the Congress of the United States officially recognized the end of World War I and passed a concurrent resolution calling for the observance of November 11 with appropriate ceremonies; and
WHEREAS, Congress passed an act on May 13, 1938, making November 11 a legal holiday, a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as Armistice Day; and
WHEREAS, in order for the people of the United States to honor veterans from all wars and conflicts involving the United States and to help Americans focus attention on the important purpose of the day - a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good - on June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law a bill changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day; and
WHEREAS, Madison is home to approximately 12,900 veterans, many of whom have been employed by or are currently employed by the City of Madison; and
WHEREAS, these veterans are an important part of our community; and
WHEREAS, we are indebted to our veterans for their service and sacrifice and that of their families; and
WHEREAS, Veterans Day is a time to reflect and honor the service and sacrifice of those individuals;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison express their appreciation and honor the contributions and sacrifices veterans have made for our country and our local community and call upon all Madisonians to observe a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 2013.
