Title
Urging the U.S. Congress and the President of the United States to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition.
Body
WHEREAS, it has become all too common for citizens of the United States to be attacked in public and private places by persons with military-style weapons and ammunition clips capable of killing dozens of people in a few minutes; and,
WHEREAS, the most recent horrific attack -- on an elementary school -- resulted in the death of 20 six- and seven-year-olds and six staff members; and,
WHEREAS, there is no place in a civil society for weapons and ammunition of this type; and,
WHEREAS, citizens should be able to leave their homes secure in the knowledge that they will not be mowed down by those armed to kill dozens of innocent victims; and,
WHEREAS, the best way to protect children and adults in our Madison schools, churches, malls, theaters and other places is to ban these types of weapons,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council urges the Congress and President of the United States to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition.
