Title
Recognizing the display, "The Wall That Heals", from August 10 through August 14, 2016 as part of the “Operation Welcome Home” 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War as directed by the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.
Body
WHEREAS, the Vietnam War began on September 26, 1959, as the Cold War conflict the “Second Indochina War” between communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam; and,
WHEREAS, the United States involvement began in 1965 and participated until April 30, 1975; and,
WHEREAS, more than 165,000 Wisconsin men and women served during the Vietnam era, and 1,239 Wisconsin military men and women made the ultimate sacrifice; and,
WHEREAS, local veteran organizations, businesses, and volunteers have assembled together to host “The Wall That Heals” to Madison as part of the “Operation Welcome Home” 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War as directed by the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act; and,
WHEREAS, “The Wall That Heals” will be displayed from August 10 through August 14, 2016 during the “Operation Badger Base” program, which includes family-friendly activities and entertainment to express gratitude and thanks to all of our Wisconsin veterans,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor, the Common Council of Madison, and the people of the Greater Madison area honor the sacrifice of the men and women who served during the Vietnam era and their families, as well as all of the men and women and their families who have served and continue to fight for our freedom and liberties in all wars and conflicts involving the United States of America.
