Proclaiming February 18, 2012 as “FIRST Robotics Day” and congratulating students, teachers and advisors on creating a successful and educational event in the City of Madison.
Body
WHEREAS, Science, technology, engineering and math - STEM classes - are the foundation for education and the future growth and sustainability of our city, county and country; and,
WHEREAS, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), was founded as the “varsity sport for the mind” to “turn young people on” to career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math, the organization designs accessible, motivational programs combining teamwork, competition, and just plain fun for young people ages 6 to 18; and,
WHEREAS, Ben Senson, Madison’s Memorial High School aerospace engineering and physics teacher, Project Lead the Way master teacher, President of BadgerBOTS Robotics Corporation and lead advisor for BadgerBOTS Team 1306, discovered an opportunity in 2004 to engage students in the worldwide, hands-on, mentor-led program that teaches technological innovation, leadership, teamwork, community service and gracious professionalism; and,
WHEREAS, BadgerBOTS Robotics consists of five programs - FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), a Farm Team program for junior Lego League participants, FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and Summer Day Camp - and offers scholarships for reduced or no cost participation based on financial need; and,
WHEREAS, all children are encouraged to participate in FIRST programs, including girls and minorities, regardless of prior experience or skill level; and,
WHEREAS, students work as a team to find solutions with guidance from mentors and coaches and an understanding that even mentors and coaches don’t have all the answers.
