Title
Declaring January 4, 2011 as "Elmer and Mary Currie Family Day" in appreciation of the Currie family's remarkable service to our country.
Body
WHEREAS, residents of Madison have for generations bravely and honorably served our country in the Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS, during World War II several Madison families had multiple members serving in the Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, Madison Mayor F. Halsey Kraege and the City of Madison periodically awarded to families with four or more members serving in the Armed Forces Emblem of Honor citations and pins; and
WHEREAS, in 1944, Madison residents Elmer and Mary Currie of 418 Fitch Court had five sons - Thomas, William, Edward, Elmer and Bernard - serving in the Armed Forces and a sixth son, John, preparing to enlist; and
WHEREAS, based on the Currie family's high level of commitment to the Armed Forces, the Currie family was informed in December of 1944 that Mayor Kraege and the City of Madison would award to them the Emblem of Honor citation and pin; and
WHEREAS, for reasons unknown to the surviving members of the Currie family and to current City of Madison officials and employees, the Currie family did not receive the promised Emblem of Honor;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and the Common Council of the City of Madison wish to express on behalf of all of Madison the deepest appreciation and gratitude to our veterans and to all families who have supported their family members' service in the Armed Forces and, in particular, the Currie family for their admirable level of commitment to our country; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that in appreciation of the Currie family's remarkable service to our country, the Mayor and the Common Council hereby declare January 4, 2011
THE ELMER AND MARY CURRIE FAMILY DAY
in the City of Madison and invite all Madisonians to join in honoring the Currie Family.
