Title
Calling on the President and Congress to end all sequester cuts related to assistance for the poor, to recommit to humane Federal policies that help our challenged neighbors lead full lives and contribute to society, and to make the difficult decisions required to pass a budget.
Body
WHEREAS, the City of Madison, in order to create a more just and rich society, is committed to helping residents who face challenges of ability or circumstance; and,
WHEREAS, in pursuit of this ideal the City has built and managed rent-subsidized apartments in partnership with the Federal Government to provide quality housing for low income residents; and,
WHEREAS, the City has also developed programs in partnership with the Federal Government to support low income home ownership and upkeep, as well as neighborhood and homelessness services; and,
WHEREAS, the Federal sequester cuts threaten the viability of these important programs that help our vulnerable residents; and,
WHEREAS, the Federal sequester further threatens numerous essential services provided outside City government, such as Head Start, schools, food aid, and more; and,
WHEREAS, it is reprehensible that the Federal Government revised sequester cuts for air traffic controllers who serve the rich, yet left cuts in place for all programs that serve the poor;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Common Council call on the President and Congress to end ALL sequester cuts related to assistance for the poor, to recommit to humane Federal policies that help our challenged neighbors lead full lives and contribute to society, and to make the difficult decisions required to pass a budget, as City of Madison does every single year.
