Declaring July 6, 2019, as “Day of Kindness and Compassion” in Madison.
Body
WHEREAS, Madison residents have a long history of demonstrating kindness on a daily basis in their homes, schools, places of faith, businesses, community organizations, and throughout their neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, kindness and compassion are traits that have the power to create a connected and welcoming city, and these traits can serve as the strong foundations of our city’s social infrastructure to improve a family’s opportunities, a neighborhood’s sense of community, the outcomes of a school, and the strength of a city, a nation, and the world; and
WHEREAS, the City of Madison is committed to promoting kindness as a core value and fostering a culture of being kind to one another; and
WHEREAS, on April 10, 2018, the City of Madison recognized the Wisconsin Tibetan Association and the Tibetan community that resettled here more than 25 years ago; and
WHEREAS, Deer Park Buddhist Center, located in the Town of Dunn, is the site of one of the most important Tibetan cultural and Buddhist teaching centers in North America; and
WHEREAS, Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, is the spiritual mentor to millions of Buddhists throughout the world and leader of the Tibetan people, revered for his powerful teachings on non-violence, tolerance, and forgiveness; and
WHEREAS, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has said, “My message is the practice of compassion, love, and kindness. Compassion can be put into practice if one recognizes the fact that every human being is a member of humanity and the human family regardless of differences in religion, culture, color, and creed. Deep down there is no difference”; and
WHEREAS, July 6 is His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council do hereby declare July 6, 2019, as “Day of Kindness and Compassion” in the City of Madison.
