Congratulating Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County as they celebrate 20 years of being an award-winning 501c3 nonprofit that collaborates with over 350 organizations working together to save lives, prevent injury and make our community safer.

Body

WHEREAS, Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County is recognized as a national   model and are accredited under guidelines established by World Health Organization Collaborating Center on Community Safety Promotion, Safe Communities America and Pan Pacific Network of Safe Communities; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County has built up a coalition of collaborating and valued partners by working with local organizations, government agencies and individuals committed to safety have joined forces to achieve what no one organization can achieve alone. Diverse partners have become an effective force for change; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County is an efficient, effective steward of resources by leveraging partner contributions of time and resources, they are an efficient venue for organizations to collaborate on shared goals; collaborative efforts fill gaps rather than duplicate services; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County engage people with the most at stake to serve those at greatest risk, particularly those with lived experience -older adults who’ve fallen; people in recovery; family members - bring special insights to prevention efforts. Communities projects offer them training and meaningful opportunities for involvement; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County acts as a clearinghouse for lifesaving programs by serving as a coalition, they employ programs shown by research to effectively tackle our community’s top causes of serious injury; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County is committed to equity and inclusion. According to the Prevention Institute, people of color and low-income populations are particularly vulnerable to injury. Safe Communities is committed to quality injury prevention aimed at closing this health-equity gap and improving safety for all; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County has trained 3,000 community members in QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) the CPR of Suicide Prevention, matched 90% of people treated for overdose in hospital emergency rooms with a recovery coach and enrolled in treatment, were the 1st in the nation to connect gun shops and health care systems to offer safe places to store guns during a suicidal crisis, developed 15 Spanish language safety education programs delivered to thousands of area Latino residents, has seen a 31% reduction in deadly falls among older adults who completed their Stepping On Program, over 18 tons of unused medicines have been safely disposed of by their MedDrop partners, has seen a 78% increase in yield to pedestrian rates at crossings with pedestrian flags, nearly 1,000 young drivers have completed their Alive at 25, a defensive driving course to prevent traffic crashes, the  #1 killer of teens and have had more Dane County African Americans participating in their elder falls prevention program than anywhere else in Wisconsin,

 

NOW THERE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council congratulate Safe Communities of Madison and Dane County as they celebrate 20 years of being an award-winning 501c3 nonprofit that collaborates with over 350 organizations working together to save lives, prevent injury and make our community safer.
