Commending Fire Chief Steven A. Davis on his retirement from the City of Madison after over 32 years of service.
Body
WHEREAS, Fire Chief Steven A. Davis started with the Madison Fire Department on August 21, 1989 and will retire on April 1, 2022 after more than 32 years of dedicated service to our community; and
WHEREAS, he has served as Firefighter, Paramedic, Training Officer, Lieutenant, Division Chief, and ultimately appointed Fire Chief on January 2, 2012; and
WHEREAS, he was the eleventh career chief to lead the Madison Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, he selected and recommended the hire of 251 members of the Madison Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, he selected and recommended the promotion of 142 members of the Madison Fire Department;- and
WHEREAS, he directed the greatest growth period in the history of the department which included the opening of two new fire stations and new Fire Administration Building, the addition of two Engine Companies, an additional Medic Unit and expanded fire, EMS, and fire inspection services to the Village of Shorewood, Town of Blooming Grove, and Town of Madison; and
WHEREAS, under his leadership, the City of Madison Fire Department achieved the highest possible Insurance Service Organization (ISO) rating: ISO Class 1, a distinction shared by only three other cities in the state; and
WHEREAS, he bolstered the City’s initiatives to reduce impact on the environment by switching to PFAS-free firefighting foam, adoption of green technology at new and existing fire stations, and putting into service North America’s first electric municipal fire engine; and
WHEREAS, he launched several important programs including MFD Peer Support, the Mobile Integrated Health program (a.k.a. Community Paramedicine), and Madison Community Alternative Response Emergency Services (CARES) Team; and
WHEREAS, he led the department and worked to develop the very successful labor/management relations that the department experiences today; and
WHEREAS, he served as Committee Chair of the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs’ Education Association; and
WHEREAS, he served as Chair of the Madison College Fire Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, he was recognized as a Hometown Hero by the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2022;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and City Council express their appreciation for the services and dedication that Fire Chief Steven A. Davis gave to our community during his years of service; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
