Recognizing April 1st as Black Woman Heal Day in the City of Madison
Body
WHEREAS, research shows that 1 in 4 Black girls in the United States will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18; and,
WHEREAS, in the United States, 38% of Black women experience sexual violence other than rape during their lifetime; and,
WHEREAS, many cultural considerations can hinder healing for Black women survivors; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Lilada Gee developed an unyielding passion to help Black girl victims of sexual abuse heal and reclaim their spirits, minds and bodies from the devastation of abuse; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Gee founded Black Woman Heal, a Madison based non-profit that serves as a vehicle to educate, empower, engage and equip Black women and girls in the healing from, and the prevention of, sexual abuse in their communities; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Gee founded Black Woman Heal Day, an international movement first recognized in Madison, Wisconsin on April 1, 2015; and,
WHEREAS, Black Woman Heal Day serves to increase awareness, prevention and healing efforts of sexual abuse throughout the African Diaspora; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Gee has committed her life to the defending of Black girlhood and the healing of Black women;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Madison Common Council recognize April 1st as Black Woman Heal Day in the City of Madison.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council and Mayor deeply thank Ms. Gee for her advocacy and dedication to the defending and healing of Black women and girls.
