Title

Warner Park Boat Launch and Breakwater Reconstruction

Body

The City of Madison Engineering and Parks Divisions are proposing a project that will simultaneously:

                     Reconstruct the existing breakwater

                     Replace the existing boat launch

Dredge accumulated sediment between the breakwater and boat launch

Breakwater

The existing breakwater, permitted and constructed in 1989, is a rubble structure, consisting of a 3”-12” riprap center, heavy riprap embankments, topped with a gravel access road.  The top of the structure is 20’ wide and side slopes vary from 2:1 (h:v) on the launch face, to 1:1 on the lake face. The gravel access road frequently develops sink holes; the riprap on the outer face is deteriorating and failing; and culverts installed to facilitate water flow, are continuously clogged.

The proposed project will address the three problems discussed in the previous paragraph: the breakwater will be raised approximately one foot; the existing face will be removed and reconstructed at a more gradual slope, using more durable stone; and the existing 36” x 22” corrugated metal culverts will be replaced with three, 3’ x 6’ concrete boxes that will provide better water circulation through the boat launch.

Boat Launch

The existing launch, constructed in 1986 and 1987, respectively, consists of four launch bays: two, central bays 30 feet in width; and two, outer bays 15 feet in width.  The heavily used launch has deteriorated and is due for replacement.

The replaced bays will be constructed in a nearly identical manner.  The length and width of all four bays will remain the same.  The replaced launches will be constructed with 8 inches of steel-reinforced concrete, underlain with washed stone, as were the original launches.

Dredging

Maintenance dredging will be completed as part of the overall project.  The area between the boat launch and breakwater will be dredged to a depth of approximately 5 feet.
