Salute to the Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Team
WHEREAS, The Wisconsin Badgers Basketball team last earned a spot in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament in 2000; and
WHEREAS, the 2013-14 Badgers compiled a win loss record of 30 and 7 on their way to Dallas and enroute captured the hearts and support of fans from throughout the country; and
WHEREAS, the Badger Basketball team had the best start in program history with an astounding 16 game winning streak that included victories over top 25 teams St. Louis, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa; and
WHEREAS, after a stumble midyear when the team lost five of six games over a two-week span, the team rebounded and regained momentum as they went on another eight-game win streak on their way to earning a number two seed in the NCAA tournament; and
WHEREAS, the Badgers started the tournament in high fashion with a 75-35 rout of American University setting a school record for the largest margin of victory in an NCAA game. From there it was an exciting comeback victory over Oregon to earn a berth in the Sweet 16; and
WHEREAS, after dominating Baylor to get into the Elite 8, the Badgers won an overtime thriller against number one seed Arizona to earn Bo Ryan's first Final Four appearance and the first in school history since 2000; and
WHEREAS, the players, coaches and fans can hold their heads very high after an incredible game against Kentucky that came up one point short; and
WHEREAS, in his 38 years of coaching in Wisconsin, Bo Ryan has not strayed from solid defense, smart play and his commitment to his players both academically and athletically; and
WHEREAS, the players that have come out of the Wisconsin basketball program are true student athletes, and are young men of character and commitment, not only to their team but also to their education. Those characteristics are invaluable but difficult to put on a scoreboard;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council express their deep appreciation and congratulations to Coach Bo Ryan, his staff and the entire University of Wisconsin Basketball team for an incredible season and an outstanding run into the NCAA Final Four. The University, the City of Madison and the entire state are proud of your efforts and accomplishments both on and off the court.
