Support of the DREAM Act
Body
WHEREAS, immigrants are essential to this nation - working, and creating businesses that keep our economy strong; and
WHREAS, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (the DREAM Act) would provide an earned path to citizenship for minors who were illegally brought to this country before they turned 16; and
WHEREAS, children who are brought to this country illegally have no method, independent of their parents, to obtain permanent status; and
WHEREAS, every year tens of thousands of undocumented students graduate from high school in the United States; and
WHEREAS, many of these children think of themselves as American, and many have no memory of their birth country; and
WHEREAS, the DREAM Act would only apply to children who are of good moral character, have resided here for five years, and have completed high school or obtained a GED; and
WHEREAS, children who have worked hard, and who value education are the type of people this country needs to innovate, and compete in a global economy;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Common Council for the City of Madison supports the passage of the DREAM Act; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we ask the United States Congress to pass the DREAM Act; and
BE FINALLY RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be sent to our Senators and Representative in Washington, D.C.
