WHEREAS, from 1992 - 2015 the City of Madison Streets Department facilitated and promoted an annual one-day compost bin sale at the Alliant Energy Center for area residents; and,
WHEREAS, in 2011 the City of Madison adopted the Madison Sustainability Plan with a goal of Preventing Solid Waste From Entering Landfill with a goal of diverting 75% of its waste from landfill sites by 2020 through programs for reducing, reusing, and recycling materials which includes promoting home composting; and,
WHERAS, the Sustainability Plan also included a goal to Increase Water Conservation with a goal of reducing per capita use by 20% by 2020 by promoting water conservation, education and enacting water-saving programs; and,
WHEREAS, in 2013 the City of Madison compost bin sale partnered with RainReserve by combining rain barrel truck-load sales at the same annual event at the Alliant Energy Center; and,
WHEREAS, from 2015 - 2020 - RainReserve provided additional program support by organizing, promoting and managing the logistics of the annual event; and,
WHEREAS, other community supporters of the program that help provide outreach and other assistance include Clean Lakes Alliance, Willy Street Co-op, Recycling-At-Home, local media outlets and various neighborhood associations; and,
WHEREAS, in 2020 the annual event moved to Garver Feed Mill due to COVID-19 and other logistical considerations; and,
WHEREAS, in 2021 the City of Madison was awarded a grant through the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) to participate in the Great Lakes Cohort of the Food Matters Initiative to achieve meaningful reductions in food wast...
