The proposed resolution adopts the Sustainability Plan Update and directs staff to implement the recommendations in the plan which may include submitting necessary requests in future Capital and Operating Budgets. No appropriation is required to adopt the plan.

Body
WHEREAS, in June 2011, the Common Council adopted (RES-12-00434) the Madison Sustainability Plan titled, “The Madison Sustainability Plan: Fostering Environmental, Economic and Social Resilience” report; and
WHEREAS, in March 2017, the Common Council adopted (RES-17-00213) which called on the City to establish a goal for City of Madison operations and community to reach a goal of 100% renewable energy and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions; and,
WHEREAS, in March 2019, the Common Council of the City of Madison adopted (RES-19-00267) the 100% Renewable Madison Report and set the goal of reaching 100% renewable energy and net zero carbon emissions for City operations by 2030; and,
WHEREAS, in July 2020, the Sustainable Madison Committee authorized a working group to develop and update the City’s Sustainability Plan; and
WHEREAS, input from the Madison community was gathered using a multimodal engagement strategy including an online survey, pop-up events, focus groups, a social media campaign, and meetings with community groups; and,
WHEREAS, the Sustainability Plan Update reflects the priorities shared by the community and builds on the sustainability and climate actions included in other City plans and initiatives, including the Comprehensive Plan, Parks and Open Space Plan, 100% Renewable Madison Report, Vision Zero Action Plan; and,
WHEREAS, the Sustainability Plan Update has 24 goals organized into eight elements of a sustainable City, which are:
1. Quality, Affordable Housing
2. Resilient City Design and Infrastructure
3. Renewable Energy and Decarbonization
