That the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison recognize the fifteenth anniversary of the relationship between Madison and Camaguey and cordially welcome artists Orestes Larios Zaak, Gregorio Perez Escobar and Maria Ofelia Granela Suarez to our City.
Body
WHEREAS, this year marks the Fifteenth Anniversary of the sister city relationship between Madison and Camaguey, Cuba; and
WHEREAS, last February a delegation of Madisonians including members of the Mayor’s staff, Janet Piraino, Rachel Strauch-Nelson and Andrew Statz, joined by Ald. Timothy Bruer, visited Camaguey to celebrate this anniversary and the designation of Camaguey’s historic city center as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO; and
WHEREAS, the Madison-Camaguey Sister City Association and the Wisconsin Medical Project have invited noted Camagueyan artists, painter Orestes Larios Zaak and sculptor Gregorio Perez Escobar, as well as curator Maria Ofelia Granela Suarez to Madison in observance of this Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, their exhibit at Di Ricci Gallery at Madison’s Edgewood College from November 4 - 24, 2009 is called “Cuban Artists in Madison: Celebrating Friendship,” and has received support from the City of Madison and funding from the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, the Overture Foundation and the Pleasant T. Rowlands Foundation; and
WHEREAS, this very week another group of Madisonians are in Camaguey to deliver humanitarian assistance under the auspices of the Wisconsin Medical Project, in an effort to further the fraternal ties between our communities; and
WHEREAS, the sister city relationship between Madison and Camaguey has been lauded and recognized in both countries as a successful model to bridge the gap that has separated the United States and Cuba for so long,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison recognize the Fifteenth Anniversary of the relationship between Madis...
