Honoring the "Ladies of the Light" for their contribution to promoting renewable energy and for their achievement in winning the Lexus Eco Challenge.
Body
WHEREAS, the "Ladies of the Light," eight young women from St. James School, along with their teacher, Gina Pignotti, saw the importance of renewable energy and developed a project that won grand prize in the Lexus Eco Challenge, which includes $40,000 in scholarships; and
WHEREAS, the "Ladies of the Light" raised enough money to put a solar panel on the roof of their school; and
WHEREAS, the "Ladies of the Light" created awareness through a documentary video; and
WHEREAS, the "Ladies of the Light" created lesson plans that focused on green energy practices; and
WHEREAS, the "Ladies of the Light" wrote a grant proposal to MG&E to fund both more solar panels at their school and provide a scholarship for another school to take on a similar project; and
WHEREAS, the "Ladies of the Light" found that 93% of U.S. energy comes from nonrenewable sources, a level that cannot be sustained;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council does hereby honor the "Ladies of the Light" for their contribution to promoting renewable energy and for their achievement in winning the Lexus Eco Challenge.
