Fiscal Note
The proposed resolution authorizes a contract for corridor safety studies and demonstration project planning. The total contract is not to exceed $365,500 and 80% of the cost is supported by federal dollars through the Safe Streets and Roads for All program. Budget authority is available in Traffic Engineering’s capital budget within the Safe Streets and Roads for All Federal Grant Program project.

PREAMBLE
The City of Madison is proposing to conduct corridor safety studies and demonstration activities along three corridors:
• S Whitney Way - Schroeder Rd to Williamsburg Way
• N Fair Oaks - E Washington to Commercial Ave
• Winnebago St - S Thornton Ave to S 2nd Street; Atwood Avenue - S 1st Street to S 2nd Street (Atwood Ave is a parallel route to Winnebago between S 1st and 2nd Streets, intersecting with Winnebago Street at S 2nd Street)
These corridors contain segments and intersections identified in the City’s High Injury Network, and all corridors serve local schools.
This project will include road safety audits of all three corridors and the development of potential infrastructure projects that address specific safety concerns identified in the baseline data and field visits. Preferred potential infrastructure projects will be implemented as temporary, low-cost demonstration projects and evaluated for efficacy.
This project was awarded a grant under the USDOT Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) that will be responsible for 80% of the planning and design costs and the City will be responsible for 20% of the costs. No funding has been identified to permanently construct successful temporary, low-cost demonstration projects.
