United Way of Dane County Celebrating 100 Years

WHEREAS, United Way of Dane County is celebrating 100 years of bringing the community together to address some of our toughest issues and most urgent needs. With a mission to unite the community to achieve measurable results that change lives, UWDC is committed to being a catalyst for inclusion and systemic change - building a Dane County where everyone can succeed in school, work and life; and,
WHEREAS, United Way of Dane County was founded in 1922 as the Madison Community Union; a group of 14 local agencies; and,
WHEREAS, United Way of Dane County invests in early childhood care, parent support, nutrition, housing and homelessness reduction, literacy and math skills, employment, safety, physical/dental/mental health, and civic engagement. UWDC takes a comprehensive approach to the whole of Dane County, curates community will and resources, and measures effectiveness to stabilize families; and,
WHEREAS, United Way of Dane County since 1922, has raised more than half a billion dollars to address the greatest needs in Dane County. It has also provided 29,234 families with housing case management services since 2006 through its coordinated network of agencies; housed 728 families with a total of 1,614 children since 2009 through its Housing First and Family Housing Stability programs; and tutored 95,952 students through the Schools of Hope Initiative since 2000 - with 21,413 tutors trained through this program to help these kids improve literacy. As part of its days of caring initiatives, UWDC placed 50,184 volunteers since 1994 - serving a total of 117,905 hours in our community; and,
WHEREAS, United Way of Dane County has been incredibly resourceful to our community during the COVID-19 pandemic, playing a key role in supporting our community during the pandemic with staff working overtime and providing critical resources to the 211 center, which saw calls increase by over 400 percent. In 2020, UWDC raised $2,361,000 for its Emergency and Recovery Fund and was able to fund 90 nonprofits, provide 155,441 meals and help 1,891 individuals with rent support; and,
WHEREAS, United Way of Dane County, under the leadership of Renee Moe and her dedicated staff, takes an intentional approach to naming racial disparities in our community and working to measurably reduce inequities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council of Madison, Wisconsin recognize that United Way of Dane County has made an enormous and invaluable contribution to Madison over the last 100 years.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council recognize that many people from all walks of life have benefited directly from the United Way of Dane County’s work.
BE IT STILL FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council recognize that United Way of Dane County is able to provide such valuable services in our community because of tens of thousands of volunteers, donors, and partners that contribute and collaborate.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council express their congratulations to United Way of Dane County, its staff, volunteers, and donors both past and present on 100 years of serving our community, and express our gratitude and continued support for that service.
