Recognizing National Voter Registration Day, National Voter Education Week, and Election Hero Day
Body
WHEREAS, the City of Madison is committed to transparency, openness, and inclusivity through civic engagement; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the City Clerk’s Office is to provide equitable access to open government by promoting the inclusion and full participation of all residents in the democratic process; and
WHEREAS, thousands of Madison residents need to update their voter registration, having moved since they last voted; and
WHEREAS, many eligible voters are unaware that their right to vote was restored once they completed all the terms of a felony sentence; and
WHEREAS, convenient and accessible options for voter registration are imperative for active participation in the election process; and
WHEREAS, voter education plays an important role in the integrity and transparency of our elections; and
WHEREAS, the City of Madison recognizes the importance of diverse partnerships with nonprofit organizations, our university and colleges, businesses, and other community organizations to facilitate the right to vote;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Madison is extending Civic Season by recognizing National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, and commits to joining national efforts to support voter registration and citizen participation in elections; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Madison will participate in National Voter Education Week October 4-8, 2021, to help voters bridge the gap between registering to vote and understanding their options for casting a ballot; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the City of Madison will commemorate Election Hero Day on November 1, 2021, recognizing the immense importance and diligent work of the City Clerk’s Office, community partners conducting voter outreach, community partners hosting voter outreach events, and Madison’s 6,000 poll workers.
