Fiscal Note
The proposed resolution amends the 2024 Police Department operating budget and authorizes a cost reimbursement agreement with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for overtime associated with participation in an ATF Task Force aimed at preventing/deterring gun violence. The amount of the agreement for the 2024 federal fiscal year (October 2023 - September 2024) is $20,707.50 and will go up incrementally each federal fiscal year. The City will be responsible for the benefits associated with the overtime, approximately $4,600 in the first year, which will be absorbed within existing resources. The resolution also authorizes the Chief to sign these agreements in future years.

Body

WHEREAS, the City and Madison Police Department (MPD) recognizes gun violence, as an issue that has impacted communities in Madison and Dane County in the form of seriously injured people as well as property destruction and,

WHEREAS, MPD recognizes that partnerships with other law enforcement entities results in a more effective and efficient response to the investigation and prevention of terrorist acts; and,

WHEREAS, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) desires Madison Police Department’s participation in its ATF Task Force with other state and local law enforcement agencies; and,

WHEREAS, this participation will enhance MPD’s capacity to identify and prevent acts of violence in the City of Madison and engage in vital information sharing with federal, state and local law enforcement partners; and,
