Recognizing National Voter Registration Day

Body

WHEREAS, the City of Madison is committed to transparency, openness, and inclusivity through civic engagement; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of the City Clerk’s Office is to provide equitable access to open government by promoting the inclusion and full participation of all residents in the democratic process; and

 

WHEREAS, thousands of Madison residents need to update their voter registration, having moved since they last voted; and

 

WHEREAS, many eligible voters are unaware that their right to vote was restored once they completed all terms of their felony sentence; and

 

WHEREAS, 2020 post-election U.S. Census data found that as many as one in four eligible voters are either not registered to vote or unsure of their registration status; and

 

WHEREAS, Wisconsin voters can verify their voter registration online at MyVote.wi.gov; and

 

WHEREAS, City of Madison eligible voters can register to vote at the front desk of any city agency, including all Madison Public Library locations; and

 

WHEREAS, eligible voters with a Wisconsin driver license or Wisconsin ID and a current address on file with the DMV may register to vote online at MyVote.wi.gov; and

 

WHEREAS, National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday dedicated to ensuring that no one who wants to cast a ballot is unable to do so due to an easily fixed registration issue;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Madison celebrates democracy and recognizes National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 19, 2023; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all eligible voters in the City of Madison are encouraged to make sure their voter registration is up-to-date, and to remain civically informed and engaged.
