Informational Project Update to the Board of Park Commissioners Regarding Lake Monona Waterfront Design Challenge

Body

On February 1, 2022, the City of Madison Common Council authorized the Parks Division to hold a design competition for master plan development for the Lake Monona Waterfront and established the Mayoral-appointed Lake Monona Waterfront Ad-hoc Committee (Resolution-22-00091, Leg File 68794). The Design Challenge is a competition to create a visionary, inclusive, and environmentally focused master plan for 1.7 miles of shoreline and 17 acres of Madison’s foremost public lakefront. The multiple phased design competition included, significant public engagement, numerous stakeholder meetings, informational sessions and public presentations along with a community-wide survey and other more focused input opportunities.

On May 10, the Lake Monona Waterfront Ad-hoc Committee completed their evaluation of the master plan submissions and design teams. The Lake Monona Waterfront Ad-hoc Committee selected the Sasaki team, which begins the second phase of the plan development process. Parks will contract with the Sasaki to work with committee members in revising their plan for submittal to the Common Council this fall. Parks staff will provide an informational update on the process and next steps for the plan development process.
