This resolution amends the Planning Division’s 2023 Adopted Capital Budget to appropriate an additional $15,000 in private donations from the Friends of Madison Arts Commission to the Municipal Art Fund for the Utility Box Art Program.

Body

WHEREAS, the City endeavors to incorporate art into public works projects in its efforts to implement the Public Art Framework adopted by the City Council (Resolution ID #30476 on March 19, 2002); and

WHEREAS, the City of Madison created the Utility Box Art Program in 2016 and the City has wrapped over 75 City owned utility boxes with locally produced art; and

WHEREAS, the program is considered an effective way to transform ordinary objects of urban infrastructure into something fun and unique while minimizing tagging and vandalism of the boxes; and

WHEREAS, on March 7, 2023 staff issued an open call to 2D artists for artwork to be considered for the 2023 Utility Box Art Program; and

WHEREAS, on April 19, 2023 the Madison Arts Commission selected local artists’ artwork based on input from the City’s Planning Division regarding images that are most suitable for printing and placement on the selected boxes; and

WHEREAS, $15,000 in additional funding from the Friends of the Madison Arts Commission will augment the budget for the 2023 Utility Box Art Program.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the funds will be accepted in accordance with Madison General Ordinance 4.29 - AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS FOR THE CITY OF MADISON; POLICY ON RECEIPT OF GIFTS; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the City is hereby authorized to formally accept a $15,000 donation from the Friends of the Madison Arts Commission for the Utility Art Program and the Planning Division’s 2023 adopted Capital Budget is hereby amended to appropriate the don...
