Fiscal Note
The total estimated cost of the project is $800,000. Half of the project costs will be paid from the Metro Transit capital budget for Bus Rapid Transit, and the remaining half will be paid from the Information Technology capital budget for Fiber and Wireless Network. No additional appropriation required.

Approving plans and specifications and authorizing the construction of Mineral Point Fiber Optic Cable Improvements. (9th and 19th AD)

WHEREAS
The city-owned fiber optic cable infrastructure along Mineral Point Road has age degradation, as well as, demand for fiber optic cable has surpassed supply to support city services,
The City of Madison planned to replace this fiber optic cable infrastructure in 2024,
The current fiber optic cable infrastructure is in conflict with the bus rapid transit stations under construction,
Performing the fiber optic cable infrastructure replacement with the BRT project will result in lower overall costs to the City because it will avoid temporary relocations,
Performing the work in 2023 will reduce delays to the BRT project and reduce internet service outages to important Metropolitan Unified Fiber Network partners, like Madison Metropolitan School District, WiscNet, UW Hospitals & Clinics and Madison College, to name a few.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,
1) That the plans and specifications for Mineral Point Road Fiber Optic Cable Infrastructure Improvements be and are hereby approved,
2) That the Board of Public Works is authorized to advertise and receive bids for these projects, or due to time constraints, this work may be completed by negotiated change order to an existing contract(s), if pricing received is a good value to the City, and any such change orders be authorized by the Board of Public Works per existing policy.
