WHEREAS, Alder Keith Furman was appointed to the Madison Common Council on August 7, 2018 and elected to the Madison Common Council on April 2, 2019; and

 

WHEREAS, Alder Furman served on the City-County Liaison Committee; Digital Technology Committee; Disability Rights Commission; Board of Public Works; Room Tax Commission; Ad Hoc Landmarks Ordinance Review Committee (Chair); Finance Committee; Committee on Employee Relations; Transportation Policy & Planning Board; President’s Work Group to Review Council Communication Tools and Processes; President’s Work Group to Review Administrative Procedure Memoranda (APM) Applicable to Alders; Task Force on Structure of City Government; Ad Hoc Task Force on the Structure of City Government (TFOGS) Final Report Implementation Work Group (Chair); Task Force on Digital Inclusion Strategic Priorities (Chair); Economic Development Commission; Finance Committee; Common Council Executive Committee; Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award Committee; and Performance Excellence Leadership Team; and

 

WHEREAS, Alder Furman was elected by his peers to serve as President of the Common Council from 2022-2023; and

 

WHEREAS, as Council President, member of Task Force on the Structure of City Government (TFOGS), and Chair of Ad Hoc Task Force on the Structure of City Government (TFOGS) Final Report Implementation Work Group, Alder Furman championed efforts to improve the Common Council, including implementation of virtual meetings, hybrid meetings, and improving Council meeting structure, and improved communications and made the job of alder more accessible and equitable for current and future alders; and

 

WHEREAS, Alder Furman worked closely with staff, committees and the public on major transportation policy initiatives including Bus Rapid Transit, Transit Network Redesign, Vision Zero, Transportation Demand Management Program, Transit Oriented Development, Upgraded Fare Collection Technology, Safe Streets Madison, and Complete Green Streets, and the reconstruction of Old Middleton Road, Craig Avenue, University Avenue, and Lake Mendota Drive; and

 

WHEREAS, Alder Furman worked with Planning staff on the Odana Area Plan, held neighborhood meetings for multiple developments that will help with Madison's strong need for additional housing, and chaired efforts to update the City’s Landmark Ordinances; and

 

WHEREAS, Alder Furman supported the creation of and successfully sponsored additional investments in the Community Alternative Response Emergency Services (CARES) initiative; and

 

WHEREAS, Alder Furman helped create and chair a Task Force on Digital Inclusion Strategic Priorities with representatives from Dane County, Madison Metropolitan School District, and the City of Madison, that led to recommendations, including a Digital Inclusion Coordinator, which were successfully funded during budget deliberations; and

 

WHEREAS, Alder Furman participated in stormwater watershed studies, helped update stormwater development ordinance, and worked on projects related to flood mitigation; and

 

WHEREAS, as Council President, Alder Furman helped onboard the new Chief of Staff, Administrative Legislative Assistant, and Community Engagement Specialist; met weekly with the Chief of Staff; improved the Common Council agenda and consent agenda document; helped develop an entirely revamped onboarding process for new alders; and re-implemented an Alder Mentor program; and

 

WHEREAS, Alder Furman, through his hard work and dedication to his alder duties, has faithfully and with honor served his constituents and the City of Madison;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council commend and

thank Alder Keith Furman for his dedicated service to his constituents in District 19 and the City of Madison.
