Commemorating January 27, 2023, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day

 

Body

WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. At least six million Jews were murdered. Roma, people with disabilities, and Poles were also targeted for destruction or decimation. Millions more, including gay men and political dissidents, also suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny; and,

 

WHEREAS, on January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz, the largest Nazi killing center and concentration camp complex where approximately 1.1 million people had been murdered; and,

 

WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 60/7 on November 1, 2005, to designate January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day to commemorate and remember the Holocaust and its victims and; and,

 

WHEREAS, the theme of the 2023 International Holocaust Remembrance Day is Home and Belonging, which encourages the exploration of “how victims adjusted their ideas of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ as they faced the violent, antisemitic onslaught during the Holocaust, and what ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ meant to survivors”; and,

 

WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and,

 

WHEREAS, we the people of Madison should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution, and tyranny;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council and Mayor commemorate January 27, 2023, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of its survivors.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all Madisonians should work to promote human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs.
