Title
Naming Madeleine Bohn as Madison's Youth Poet Laureate.
Body
Whereas poetry promotes dialogue and understanding between generations; and
Whereas poetry promotes civic responsibility, civic engagement, empathy, understanding & mutual connection; and
Whereas current Madison Poet Laureate Angela Trudell Vasquez has desired to start a Youth Poet Laureate Program since she was appointed in January of 2020; and
Whereas on December 13, 2021, the Madison Common Council passed Resolution No. 68286, RES-21-008183, establishing a Youth Poet Laureate Program; and
Whereas on May 13, 2022 the Madison Common Council passed Resolution No. 71285, RES-22-00343 amending the Youth Poet Laureate Resolution so that the Youth Poet Laureate serves a one-year term in alignment with the National Youth Poet Laureate Program; and
Whereas May 4, 2022 the Madison Arts Commission issued a call for Madison's first Youth Poet Laureate; and
Whereas by the deadline on June 6, 2022 eight (8) youth had submitted applications for the position; and
Whereas on June 17, 2022 the Madison Arts Commission called a special meeting to vet the applications; and
Whereas after careful consideration the Madison Arts Commission recommends Madeleine Bohn to serve as the Madison's first Youth Poet Laureate, and Megan Ngo as 1st runner up, and Logan Lloyd as 2nd runner up.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Madison names Madeleine Bohn to serve as Youth Poet Laureate, with Megan Ngo as 1st runner up, and Logan Lloyd as 2nd runner up.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Madeleine Bohn will be invited to read a poem at the September 6, 2022 Common Council meeting.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that Madeleine Bohn shall be known as the “Madison Youth Poet Laureate” from July 13, 2022 until July 12, 2023.
