Amending Approved Youth Poet Laureate Program Resolution No. 68286, RES-21-00818 to be an annual designation instead of biennial.

Body

WHEREAS the Common Council approved establishing a Youth Poet Laureate Program for the City of Madison, authorizing a contract with Urban Word NYC, Inc to become a member of the National Youth Poet Laureate Program, and for annual subscription services (Resolution No. 68286, RES-21-00818); and

 

WHEREAS, since that time, it has been determined that the Urban Word NYC, Inc Program is an annual Program and the City of Madison Program should be aligned with that program; and

 

WHEREAS, amendments to Resolution No 68286 should be made as follows:

 

WHEREAS, the Madison Poet Laureate shall work with the Madison Arts Commission to create written guidelines and selection criteria, prior to identifying the individual chosen by the City of Madison as the Youth Poet Laureate, no later than April 1 of the year in which the Youth Poet Laureate is to be so designated.

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Madison should name a Youth Poet Laureate biennially, annually, in addition to our City Poet Laureate, to recognize a youth under the age of twenty for their literary achievements and provide leadership opportunities to other young writers by their literary ambassadorship.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that biennially annually a Youth Poet Laureate shall be designated for Madison, to be honored at the first meeting of the Madison Common Council in June every two years following their appointment, and who shall be known as the “Madison Youth Poet Laureate” for the period of June 1 to May 31 of the following two-year a 12-month period.
