The proposed resolution authorizes the acceptance of a $10,000 grant with the New Blue Project for advancing transformative policing and amends the Police Department’s adopted 2022 operating budget to appropriate these funds. No City levy is required.

Amending the Police Department’s 2022 operating budget, and authorizing the Mayor and Chief of Police to accept a New Blue Project grant award of $10,000 for promoting women in policing and advancing transformative policing

Body
WHEREAS, the Madison Police Department seeks opportunities for improvement and innovation; and,
WHEREAS, the New Blue Project’s mission is to develop transformative solutions to problematic police policies, procedures, practices and mindsets to reform America’s policing system. By 2025, New Blue (a nonprofit) will develop 100 transformative officers and solutions; and,
WHEREAS, MPD Detective Amelia Levett and Sergeant Meg Hamilton competed for and obtained spots in the inaugural class of New Blue Fellows; and the Fellowship has 3 primary focus areas: a cohort class model of continuous learning, an induction trip to the UK, and $5,000 dedicated to finding solution to a community-based problem; and,
WHEREAS, Det. Levett is interested in creating a mentorship program to grow and develop representative leadership within the Department; and Sgt. Hamilton is interested in finding 24/7 childcare for MPD employees, as childcare is often a barrier that prevents women heads of household from seeking promotion or leadership positions.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Chief of Police are authorized to accept and enter into an agreement with the New Blue Project for $10,000 ($5,000 each for the two projects described above).

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Police Department’s 2022 Operating Budget is amended to appropriate any funds received for the purposes of the grant, including modifications upon appropriate approvals from the funder.
