Honoring Mary Mullen for Over 50 Years of Service and Commitment to the Dunn’s Marsh Neighborhood

WHEREAS, Mary Mullen is a founding member of the Dunn’s Marsh Neighborhood Association and advocated for renters’ rights ensuring access to all residents and,
WHEREAS, Mary has given her time as poll worker during elections over the last 50 years; and,
WHEREAS, Mary was an advocate for the city purchase of the 19.3-acre Marlborough Park and the neighborhood desires for the location of the shelter, bike path, “wild” areas, and community gardens; and,
WHEREAS, Mary in 1970 founded the Marlborough Park community garden, which today holds over 160 plots, bringing people and food from different cultures, languages and backgrounds together; and,
WHEREAS, Mary is an activist, folk band musician, avid gardener, photographer, and writer and has applied her skills to the betterment of the Dunn’s Marsh neighborhood and its people; and,
WHEREAS, Mary Mullen documented the history of Dunn’s Marsh in her book “In Our Own Words”; and,
WHEREAS, she has sought funding for the installation of a neighborhood sign, a little free library and the mosaic art project for the pedestrian bridge and the underpass; and,
WHEREAS, every year Mary sponsors the Make Music Madison event in the Dunn’s Marsh area; and,
WHEREAS, Mary has diligently captured all the content and documenting via photos and stories the beauty of the neighborhood in the neighborhood social media accounts;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Madison commends and thanks Mary Mullen for her many hours and years of work to ensure Dunn’s Marsh is a welcoming community that embraces people from different ways of life and a community that values the protection of green spaces for the enjoyment of everyone.
