Body
Public Health-Madison & Dane County (PHMDC) currently receives a Public Health Emergency Preparedness grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and is concluding year two of the current five-year grant cycle. Grant funds are used for a variety of activities, including to plan and conduct emergency preparedness exercises of scenarios with potentially significant public health consequences (e.g. major flood events, long-term power outages, and pandemic flu).

Communications expertise is critical to develop, coordinate, and disseminate information, alerts, and warnings to the public and responders in the event of an emergency. Through analyzing the emergency preparedness exercises, Public Health Madison & Dane County has identified the need to improve community awareness of public health threats in Dane County, and to develop risk and information messages for bioterrorism, public health emergencies or other emerging health issues.

Position #1124, a Health Education Coordinator, is a 0.9 FTE position currently funded at 0.8 FTE. Using Public Health Emergency Preparedness grant dollars, PHMDC proposes funding the remaining 0.1 FTE of position #1124, plus reclassification and funding of an additional 0.1 FTE of currently unfunded position authority to create capacity for the Health Education Coordinator to create crisis and risk communication plans and act as the Public Health Madison & Dane County Public Information Officer in the case of a public health emergency.
