PREAMBLE
The Madison Fire Department recognizes the importance and effectiveness of residential fire sprinklers in saving lives and property, protecting the environment, and reducing economic losses. The MFD is taking every opportunity to educate and promote the availability of home fire sprinklers, and working to encourage builders and developers to offer buyers the option to protect their homes from the devastating impacts of fire. Additionally, the Department’s Strategic Plan calls for the installation of fire sprinklers as a strategy to support our Goal of Community Risk Reduction.

WHEREAS, The effects of home fires are far-reaching and longstanding. A home fire can become deadly in less than two minutes due to today’s construction material and common synthetic furnishings producing toxic smoke; and

WHEREAS, Homes should be the place where our residents feel safe. In reality, is where they have the greatest risk of injury or death from fire; and

WHEREAS, Home fires put our firefighters at risk, not only from fire, but also through exposure that can lead to health issues; and

WHEREAS, Fire sprinklers not only save lives, but also property, money, and the environment; and

WHEREAS, Combined with working smoke alarms and proper fire escape planning, fire sprinklers in all new homes can reverse the effects of home fires; and

WHEREAS, By taking part in a national day of action, let us recognize that protecting new homes with fire sprinklers will make the future safer for residents, first responders, and entire communities for generations to come.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, by the City of Madison that May 19th is Home Fire Sprinkler Day 2018 in the City of Madison and all residents are encouraged to educate themselves about the dangers of home fires and the unparalleled benefits of home sprinklers and to begin...
