Fiscal Note

The proposed resolution authorizes the Planning Division to accept $20,000 from the Madison Community Foundation in order to administer a grant program that will repurpose felled ash trees into art. Ten artists will receive $1,500 grants to repurpose the wood and the remaining $5,000 will go toward expenses related to exhibition of the projects and toward an internship to help facilitate the grant program and exhibition. The Madison Arts Program in Planning’s 2018 Adopted Operating Budget will be amended to reflect the donation and expense. The Parks Division has also approved this program and no additional General Fund appropriation is required.

Body

WHEREAS, the City of Madison is felling hundreds of ash trees in response to the Emerald Ash Borer infestation, and

 

WHEREAS, as part of their 75th anniversary, the Madison Community Foundation (MCF) identified an opportunity they are calling, “Phoenix from the Ashes,” to retrieve felled ash wood and provide ten (10) artists with $1500 grants to repurpose the wood into art, and

 

WHEREAS, they are also contributing $2000 towards expenses related to a final exhibition of the projects developed through this grant, and

 

WHEREAS, MCF is also contributing $3000 towards an internship for someone to help facilitate the grant program and exhibition.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Planning Division, on behalf of the City of Madison, is authorized to accept funding not to exceed $20,000 from the Madison Community Foundation in order to administer the Phoenix from the Ashes grant program and exhibition.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Madison Arts Program Administrator will administer the grant project.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Madison Arts Commission will select the artists who will receive the grant funding.

 

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the 2018 Adopted Operating Budget of the Planning Division is amended to appropriate these funds from the Madison Community Foundation.
