Presentation: Poetry Recitation by Jaia Davis - "I am F. A. T."

Body

Jaia is an elementary school student in Madison, Wisconsin. Learning to read at age 3, Jaia has had a love for words and books all her life. When Jaia entered kindergarten, she was assessed at the 10th grade reading level. The school system did not have the means to test her reading ability beyond this level for her age.

Bridging the tremendous Achievement Gap for African American students in Madison, WI, Jaia is enrolled in the Talented and Gifted/Advanced Learner program for literacy at her school. Additionally, her math team placed 3rd in the City-wide Math Meet. Jaia wrote I am F.A.T. after experiencing bullying when she was 9 years old and in the 4th grade.

Jaia has two older siblings - a sister and brother. Her hobbies include reading, of course, riding her bike, taking selfies, shopping…normal tween stuff. Following in her mother and sister’s footsteps, Jaia hopes to one day attend college and become an engineer. She would like to eventually work for a prominent cell phone or computer company. “Hey, who wouldn’t want free wi-fi?” she says.
