This proposed resolution authorizes the double fill of position #1564 at CG16-RG15 during the anticipated date range of June 19, 2017 through Sept 1, 2017 at an estimated cost of $13,599.00 for salaries and benefits. This cost will be absorbed in Park’s 2017 operating budget and managed through salary savings.

WHEREAS, Bolz Conservatory Curator, John Wirth, is retiring from City of Madison employment effective Sept. 1, 2017 with his last day on the job being June 30, 2017; and

WHEREAS, John Wirth has been the Bolz Conservatory Curator for 27 years; and

WHEREAS, John Wirth has been the Bolz Conservatory Curator throughout the entire time the Bolz Conservatory has been an asset to the City of Madison; and

WHEREAS, John Wirth has gained unique knowledge and experiences of the Bolz Conservatory during his tenure with the City of Madison; and

WHEREAS, this position is critical to the smooth operations of Olbrich Botanical Gardens’ Bolz Conservatory as it is a key position that manages a very valuable plant collection within the Bolz Conservatory, a valuable orchid collection housed in the production greenhouses, and oversees the tropical house and floriculture house plant production; and

WHEREAS, the one other City position responsible for this work will be on extended leave during the summer through mid-October; and

WHEREAS, existing staff will not be able to operate the Bolz Conservatory, production greenhouses, seven days/week with two key staff absent; and

WHEREAS, Olbrich Botanical Gardens as a component of Madison Parks has requested the authorization to double-fill the position held by Mr. Wirth in order to ensure an orderly transition; and

WHEREAS, Olbrich Botanical Gardens/Madison Parks intends to recruit to fill the position on or about June 19, 2017 in order to allow the selected candidate time to ...
