Acewood Pond Sand Filter in Acewood Conservation Park

This project will install a sand and iron filter near the outlet of Acewood Pond. The filter will trap dissolved Phosphorus that leaves the pond and contributes to algae blooms in Lake Monona. The filter consists of an 8 foot wide 300 foot long sand strip 1” above the normal water level. Impacts to the park will include the removal of 1 ash tree and 1 walnut tree , some scrubby willow and box elder and the modification of approximately 300 feet of bank. The edge of the filter will be planted with tall native grasses and shrubs which will screen the device from park visitors. The construction will take approximately 2 weeks and will consist of excavating a 1.5’ deep trench, back filling with the sand mixture and planting the native vegetation.
