The City's match requirement of $11,375 (25 percent) will be met using funds included in the Police Department's operating budget to pay the fringe benefit costs associated with the overtime funded by the grant.

Authorizing the Mayor, City Clerk and Chief of Police to accept a public safety grants from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation: Speed Enforcement ($41,500) and Bicycle Safety Enforcement ($4,000)

Body
WHEREAS, each year the Wisconsin Department of Transportation-Bureau of Transportation Safety (WI DOT-BOTS) provides funds to local police agencies for overtime for enforcement of traffic violations; and

WHEREAS, this year WI DOT-BOTS has offered the Madison Police Department a total of $41,500 speed enforcement (pass-through funding from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office) and $4,000 for bicycle enforcement; and

WHEREAS, this initiative will enable safer conditions for bicyclists by deploying officers for enhanced enforcement of bicycle laws; and

WHEREAS, this initiative will enable safer traffic conditions by deploying officers for enhanced enforcement of vehicular speed laws in collaboration with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office; and

WHEREAS, the grant funds enable the Police Department’s Traffic and Specialized Services Section to coordinate additional traffic enforcement activities that would otherwise not be provided; and

WHEREAS, the Department has an opportunity to partner with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office in the speed enforcement initiative in an effort to reduce incidents of excessive vehicle speeds on City of Madison roadways so as to contribute to decreasing the number of deaths and/or injuries due to crashes; and

WHEREAS, required matching funds of 25% are met through City and Dane County Sheriff’s Office fringe benefits paid for grant-funded overtime and associated in-kind administrative expenses.
