To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Bernard-Hoover Boathouse in James Madison Park and the 40th anniversary of the Mendota Rowing Club, and proclaiming June 6, 2015 as Learn to Row Day.  
 
 
Body
WHEREAS, The Bernard-Hoover Boathouse is historically significant as the last remaining building of the commercial pleasure boat and boat livery industry in Madison; and
 
WHEREAS, The boathouse is a reminder of the time when residents of Madison were more dependent on the lakes for travel and when large pleasure boats took city residents and vacationing tourists who visited Madison on recreational outings to resorts, which once dotted the lakeshores; and
 
WHEREAS, these commercial activities occurred at the site from 1855 until 1968, when the site was purchased by the City of Madison; and
 
WHEREAS, the Boathouse was designated an Historic Landmark by the City of Madison in 1976; and
 
WHEREAS, 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of  the current boathouse being constructed in 1915 after fire destroyed the previous boathouse and is the third boathouse located on the property since 1855; and
 
WHEREAS, the Mendota Rowing Club has operated in the Boathouse since 1975 and is a non-profit, multifaceted organization that encourages people of all ages and levels of experience to experience the sport of rowing; and
 
WHEREAS, the Mendota Rowing Club offers Learn to Row classes and Novice programs for both Juniors and Adults; and
 
WHEREAS, the Mendota Rowing Club collaborates with the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association (APDA) to provide rowing instruction and supervised workouts for people with Parkinson's Disease and their caregivers; and
 
WHEREAS, the Mendota Rowing Club has provided assistance in the maintenance and improvement of the Boathouse over the years; and
 
WHEREAS, 2015 is the 40th anniversary of the Mendota Rowing Club.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Common Council hereby commemorate 2015 as the 100-year anniversary of the construction of the Bernard-Hoover Boathouse in James Madison Park and the 40-year anniversary of the Mendota Rowing Club.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Common Council proclaim June 6, 2015 as Learn to Row Day and encourage residents to attend the event at the 100-year old Bernard's Boathouse sponsored by the Mendota Rowing Club in its 40th year of operation.
