Title
Congratulating Awonder Liang for Winning His Second World Youth Chess Festival Championship.
Body
WHEREAS, Awonder Liang, a student at Van Hise Elementary School in Madison, was the youngest player in the United States to achieve the Expert Rating in Chess in 2011, and Master Rating in 2013; and,
WHEREAS, he is the youngest player ever in the United States to beat an International Master in a regular tournament game; and,
WHEREAS, he is also the youngest player in the world to ever beat a Grandmaster in a regular tournament game; and,
WHEREAS, in 2011 he won the Gold Medal in the Under 8 Open Section of the World Youth Chess Championships in Brazil; and,
WHEREAS, in 2013 he won the Gold Medal in the Under 10 Open Section of the World Youth Chess Championships in the United Arab Emirates winning his first ten games in an eleven round tournament, thereby securing first place with a round to spare; and,
WHEREAS, in March of 2014 Awonder was pictured with his classmates from Van Hise Elementary on the cover of Chess Life Magazine which included an article about his accomplishments and pictures with his teammates, teachers and principal; and,
WHEREAS, in May 2014 Awonder was ranked 2nd in the world in the Under 12 category in Chess; and,
WHEREAS, at the US Open in Orlando in August Awonder will be awarded the Outstanding Player Achievement Award by the United States Chess Federation for his second Gold Medal at the World Youth Chess Championships last year,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council wishes to recognize and congratulate Awonder Liang for his incredible accomplishments on the world chess stage and express appreciation to his family, teammates, coach, teachers, and principal in continuing to guide him on what promises to be a remarkable journey ahead.
