Title
Madison West Rocket Club
Body
WHEREAS, the Madison Rocket Club was founded in 2003, and in its nine year history, has consistently been one of the top 20 finalists in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC); and

WHEREAS, the 2012 TARC challenge was considered the most challenging in the organization's history; requiring each team to design, build, and launch a rocket carrying a two-egg payload to an altitude of exactly 800 feet, during a 43 to 47 second flight, and have the rocket parachute back to earth without cracking the eggs; and

WHEREAS, the Madison West Rocket Club sent three teams to the 2012 TARC to compete against teams from across the country; and

WHEREAS, the four-member team of Meng Lou, Hanwook Chua, Tashi Aruktsang, and Suzanne Hanle decisively won the competition, beating 99 other finalists and earning an expense paid trip to London to compete at the Farnborough International Air Show, where the team placed second; and

WHEREAS, if today's Common Council meeting had been held in the council chambers, the Mayor and Common Council would have asked for a demonstration of the club's talent, since use of the chambers as a launch site would have had no appreciable effect of quality on the chambers; and

WHEREAS, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is essential to fostering successful students, nurturing innovative thinking, and enabling the United States to remain an economic and technological leader;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison commend the West Rocket Club on its impressive achievements over the past nine years; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council pay special tribute to the effort and dedication of the Rocket Club's faculty advisor Christine Hager, and its mentor Pavel Pinkas; and

BE IT STILL FURTHER RESOLVED, the Mayor and Common Council congratulate Meng Lou, Hanwook Chua, Tashi Aruktsang, and Suzanne Hanle on winning the 2012 Team American Rocketry Challenge.
